Our First School Robotics ClubWe started our school 'Robotics' journey in 2016. Our school purchased three Lego WeDo kits and we set up an after-school club for nine pupils. The children worked on various 'Getting Started' projects . They followed step-by- step instructions and built various robotic structures. They became familiar with the different Lego pieces and their functions. For example- the Lego Hub, the motor and sensor. Next, we worked on learning how to program the robots. Each 'Getting Started' project guided the children and showed them what coding blocks and combinations of coding blocks to use. During the first few weeks, the children spent a lot of time testing various programming blocks and sequences. From the 'Getting Started' projects the children were able to:
Challenges1. Technology- The Lego WeDo Smart Hub connects to the laptop/tablet using Bluetooth. Our school laptops were not Bluetooth enabled. We purchased a Bluetooth dongle. However, at times the children found it difficult to establish Bluetooth connections between the Lego WeDo Smart hub and the laptop. 2. Working as a Team- Some of the children/ groups found it difficult to share the workload. The children were very eager to build their robots. This often ended in disagreements over who would build or program the next part etc. The children worked best when they discussed and planned their robot before building. 3. Lack of Resources- In 2016, we had three Lego WeDo 2.0 kits and two laptops. Therefore, robotics was limited to a small after-school club with nine pupils. Galway Science and Technology Festival 2016The children showcased their various projects at the Science and Technology Festival 2016. The children choose their favourite project from the 'Getting Started' section. During the Science Fair the children helped members of the pupil to program the various robots at our table.
